Whilst it does lose its way, Apostle is still an effective and very decent mystery-horror flick.

This isn't to say that Apostle is a flawless victory - far from it, in fact - but it's a worthy (and necessary) stepping stone for a filmmaker who will only move up the ranks in the years to come.

A brutal piece of work, which, if you're familiar with director Gareth Evans' aesthetic, is like describing the sun as hot; he treats his supporting characters as pieces of meat to be relieved, screaming, of their breath, whether by gun or spear or worse.

For his latest film, Apostle, Evans shows no signs of being rusty with his keen genre storytelling abilities, delivering up an enthralling and brutal descent into madness anchored by a breathless performance from Dan Stevens.

For everything that works, Apostle never quite delivers on its promise.

Evans makes sure aggression flows throughout this turn-of-the-century horror show, dipping a mix of "The Crucible" and "The Wicker Man" into a gurgling vat of blood and pain.

While some aspects of the story practically jump out at you, most of the secrets of the island will keep you guessing well past the two-thirds mark of the film.

Evans is an exceptional action filmmaker, but here he also proves himself an equally adept storyteller.

A muddled Wicker Man-inspired horror that has bursts of style, but fails to find depth beneath its blood-spewing surface.

A grimy period piece that puts lofty, unresolvable questions about fanaticism through a creaky, hand-operated torture device.
October 15, 2018
Apostle blends atmospheric storytelling with grisly brutality to mixed results, but makes for an effectively nasty (and bizarre) horror movie overall.

Gareth Evans' pivot from martial arts understands cult fervor has its own fighting stance and frantic energy. Action bursts here feel both like concession and inevitability, their pleasures plenty but perhaps less immediate in their initial burst.

But for the most part, it's a breathlessly oppressive experience, a dark and sometimes strikingly beautiful film that lives up to its most obvious cinematic forefathers.

If you're on the hunt for a frightening and original horror movie, it's a stellar choice.

You'll be on the edge of your seat for the entire second half. On the other hand, you'll want to shower afterwards.

While nothing is as virtuosic here as in The Raid movies, Apostle is nevertheless a satisfying, gory, and strange trek into religious terror.

Apostle gets too bound up in the island cult it's meant to be escaping.

Apostle is ultimately an absorbing, horrifying movie that's maybe not as smart as it wants to be. But it is a lot stranger, and more disturbing, than you might expect.

I'm not sure 'Apostle' quite justifies its 130-minute running time, but you have to say this about it: It's like nothing else you could include in your annual Halloween horror marathon this year.

That rarest of treats: a horror movie that starts out as one thing, and finishes having mutated into another.
