The director's propensity for indulgence leads to numerous scenes that - while often harrowing in the moment - feel protracted, meandering, and disconnected from the story as a whole.

The first hour or so builds to a nightmare of a conclusion, but it takes a far too convoluted path to get there.

Much like the cult it depicts, Apostle has a lot of powerful forces at its disposal, but can't seem to marshal those forces well enough to define its goals, much less achieve them.

Apostle gets too bound up in the island cult it's meant to be escaping.

When the film finally delves into horror, the pace picks up, but it felt like Apostle was missing the momentum that made Evans' previous films so engaging, and a sense of whose story it's telling.

Graphically-violent thriller has torture, gore, black magic.

The film's victims are simply pawns in a super-gory bacchanal, which is aesthetically striking but emotionally dull.

By the time Apostle arrives at its big reveal, the movie has veered off on so many tangled pathways that the ending can't resolve them all.

Evans will likely disappoint many of the fans he has attracted here; while the film does build to some gory battles, it's hardly a thrill ride.
October 15, 2018
A muddled Wicker Man-inspired horror that has bursts of style, but fails to find depth beneath its blood-spewing surface.

Shifting his energies to a Victorian-era island blood cult hasn't dimmed Evans' taste for feverish body harm, but it's more clearly laid bare his narrative shortcomings.

Alas, everything here is muted build-up with little pay-off. Psychological realism is abandoned. Characters switch loyalties and temperaments for no reason.

Whilst it does lose its way, Apostle is still an effective and very decent mystery-horror flick.

the brutality Evans uses so frequently is portrayed in such a gut-wrenching way that you can't help but squeal

Gareth Evans has proven he can not only master action films with stunning choreography, but he can also deliver a bone-chilling folk horror tale rich in mythology and shocking in violence.

If it's undeniably riddled with imperfections, Apostle is still a worthy new venture from an abundantly talented filmmaker.
October 15, 2018
A grimy period piece that puts lofty, unresolvable questions about fanaticism through a creaky, hand-operated torture device.
September 27, 2018
Evans serves up a wicked thriller with piercing visuals and a slight spin to the cult horror genre that perhaps unlike religion, I doubt viewers will want to abandon.

There is a lot to like in Gareth Huw Evans' ambitious folk horror tale, Apostle. The problem might be that there is just too much of everything to really fall in love.

Gareth Evans's gory slow-burn horror/thriller patiently drills its images and themes of idolatry into your head.
