A grueling experience, it's often actively unpleasant to sit through...There were times I'd have contemplated an offer of cutting my own ear off to make it stop.

The film is uniquely incurious about Van Gogh himself beyond the myth of what he represents, which is the last quality we need in a Van Gogh film anymore.

Willem Dafoe's performance is great butAt Eternity's Gate isn't without headache-inducing decisions that serve to hurt the film's purpose.

For all of Schnabel's determined technique, nothing in his movie ever quite achieves the emotional clarity of a single Van Gogh painting.

This is very much an artist lovingly commemorating an artist he holds dear [and in that regard] quite possibly more a film about Schnabel himself than Van Gogh.

The moments that work here are ultimately outweighed by indulgence and artistic pretensions that don't fit with the overall subject of the film.

This is both a fitting tribute to an artist who rebuffed conventional painting techniques, and a disappointingly self-indulgent exercise, the efforts of a filmmaker whose affinity for abstractions often interfere with the story he's trying to tell.

Schnabel tries to give new life to familiar material through a self-conscious naturalism full of hand-held camera shots, long takes and lens flares. Unfortunately, this breath of fresh air eventually turns stale.

Schnabel celebrates the art while making its maker a tragic crackpot whom we can ogle in this snooty tragedy porn, stroking our own egos for recognizing his worth.

Every strange encounter before Vincent's eventual death is here, but it never amounts to much besides an actor's showcase for Willem Dafoe

An incomplete exercise that lacks crucial emotional brushstrokes despite a rich palette and a piano-heavy score, At Eternity's Gate still offers the thrill of being inside an artistic process, adoringly interpreted.

Whilst close-ups of Dafoe's face, and wobbly point of view shots serve to convey inner struggle, if you go in unaware of the artist's life and work, it's tough to know what's going on, without knowing what's gone before.

Vulgar defacements of the art work match the eye-rollingly portentous melodrama with which van Gogh's torments are depicted.

The radiant visuals provide the beating heart for what otherwise would have been a distant, thoroughly reverent series of sketches.

It boats a remarkably rich and sensitive portrayal of the artist from Willem Dafoe but, as a piece of drama, it is torpid in the extreme.

At Eternity's Gate has much more technique than substance, making it virtually impossible to form any emotional connection to it.

Offers little excitement or fresh insight.

While At Eternity's Gate adheres to the traditional view of van Gogh as an ahead-of-his-time visionary, the film also lends that narrative a fresh, expressive anguish.
