Nazi monsters vs. American GIs could be an interesting genre exercise, but Overlord is a clichéd mess that is often tedious and predictable, lacking in wit and imagination.

The climax was cool but ultimately...I would've loved just to see the soldiers going to war with some zombie creations out of the lab.

Overlord, in all its self-seriousness, has no real subtext it tries to tackle, or sense of importance that would elevate this sort of plot into A-movie status. So then why not embrace what it is?

Even with two-dimensional villains, a rote plot, and little in the way of invention, it's an original R-rated horror movie that tries something weird. That's got to count for something.

The moral lessons, let's call them that, are of a clumsy fool that borders on the immoral. [Full Review in Spanish]

Despite the talent at hand and the originality of the film, "Overlord" still registers as a missed opportunity. [Full Review in Spanish]

The film loses its initial force by stopping to explain nazism to millennials and simplifies the allied victory and underestimates the public it's trying to aim to. [Full Review in Spanish]

This gory B-movie initially masquerades as a war film, but Nazi-occupied France is simply a convenient setting.

Overlord's problem is that it doesn't seem terribly interested in showing us who its villains are, and thus significantly mutes the satisfaction of watching them get flamethrowered to death.

As a piece of moral commentary cloaked in a sci-fi gimmick, Overlord is uninspired. As an action thriller, it's just aggressively boring.

Zombies. Nazis. Clichés. Insane violence. "Overlord" delivers a whole lot of much too much.

A slick "Re-animating Private Ryan" mashup that grinds through it cliches at half-speed.

It's oddly sloppy and unambitious, mistaking loud for really crazy.

Nazi zombies? What could go wrong? Plenty, including making us wait forever for the star attraction.

A simple mechanism to deliver squib packs and swear words.

You might hope such a premise would license a wonderfully over-the-top movie, but...the splatter scenes in Julius Avery's film are pretty dull, seemingly designed to impress only young viewers who have never seen anything like them before.

This Nazis-with-supernatural-weapons horror schlock drags its feet getting to its fantastical elements and then does absolutely nothing interesting with them, just wallows in dull, rote gore and grue.

Overlord leaves a wealth of possibilities unmined. One imagines it was more compelling as pitch than finished product.

Avery seems unsure of what to do and settles for mindlessly piling on the gore. The writers appear to give up too.
